Cleaning Tips & Tricks

Spot Removal Tips: Like most of us, you probably have spilled or splashed something on your carpet and wondered what to use to clean it.   While your local store will have a number of cleaning solutions, you may already have the answer under you sink.  Simply create your own spot removal kit by mixing the following four solutions.

  1. One cup of water with one teaspoon of Dish detergent.
  2. One cup of water with one teaspoon of Laundry detergent.
  3. One tablespoon of clear ammonia with one-half cup water.
  4. One-third cup of distilled vinegar to two-thirds cup water.

You will need to purchase a commercial dry cleaning solution that is available at hardware stores or supermarkets.

When a spot or stain occurs, it is important to:
bulletAct quickly, because the longer the stain remains, the harder it is to remove from carpet.
bulletUse a clean white towel and blot the stain to remove as much liquid or scrape up as much solid materials as you can.
bulletApply the appropriate spot remover as directed for each type of stain.
bulletAlways work toward the center of spot.
bulletRepeat steps, if necessary, and blot between steps with a clean white towel.
bulletBe careful not to over wet the area.

Blood - Apply cool dish detergent solution and blot. Apply cool ammonia solution and blot. Apply laundry detergent solution.  Rinse with tap water and blot dry.

Burns - Apply one teaspoon of white distilled vinegar to carpet shampoo.  Rinse with tap water and blot dry.  Carefully trim fibers with scissors.  If damage is extensive consult a professional.

Chocolate- Apply cool dish detergent solution and blot.   Apply ammonia solution and blot.  Rinse with tap water.  Blot again.   Apply white vinegar solution.  Rinse with tap water and blot dry.

Coffee-Soda-Tea - Flush with cold tap water or soda water.   Apply white vinegar solution and blot. Rinse with water and blot dry.

Crayons-Lipstick-Wax - Apply dry cleaning solution and blot.  Repeat until stain fades.  Apply dish detergent solution.  Blot Again.  Rinse with tap water and blot dry.

Gum- Chill with ice cubes.  Scrape off as much as possible.  Apply dry cleaning solution and blot.
